"I am big on simplicity and practical common sense. I find we are being marketed more and more dangerous products that they are trying to convince us we need, many times at the expense of our health. For example, many personal care products are full of ingredients that are either known carcinogens or thought to be carcinogenci.
Since these ingredients are on the FDA's GRAS list ("generally recognized as safe"), many products have never been tested and may never be. I find it rather ironic that companies like Dove and Maybelline promote their contributions to cancer when their products contain many of the same ingredients that are either causing cancer or are thought by many to cause cancer.
That is why, many years ago, I went back to basics, which means also as back to natural as is reasonable. Unfortunately, there is so much misinformation and mis-marketing that leads people to think that products are "natural" or "organic," yet really are not at all.
I found a store in downtown Ottawa called Planet Botanix that sells many natural personal care products and cosmetics as well as household cleaning products. The owner makes many of the personal care products herself, and brings in natural cosmetics and cleaning products that are made locally, as much as possible. Her products are truly natural - no gimmicks.
I particularly love her face cream, called Rosa y Sol, which at $20 is cheaper than most much-lesser quality, synthetic products. She makes wonderful salves for winter skin and ailments. She carries natural cosmetics and things like lead-free nailpolish (it shocks me to see how many women allow their little girls to put on nailpolish, having no idea that the polish contains lead, which seeps thru the nails into the bloodstream).
Her products are truly of good quality and priced more than reasonably compared with many commercial non-natural goods.
I am so grateful that it exists and have referred many women to her store, some only discovering after suffering many of rashes and dis-figuration that they are sensitive or allergic to commercial synthetic products.
We all need to be careful what we put on our skin. it is, after all, our largest organ."
